Overhead Tracks for Robots

Choose or customize the right 7th-axis overhead rail for your robot, plus other add-on accessories.

Overview

A robot overhead rail, also known as an overhead-mounted robot rail, is an implementation of a robot transfer unit (RTU), also called a robot 7th axis, travel axis, or external axis. It mainly consists of a gantry frame, robot moving platform, reducer / servo motor, gear, linear guide, and drag chain, etc., and is usually installed in the air, on the ceiling, or on walls via a gantry truss or ceiling suspension, greatly expanding the robot's working range and saving more floor space compared with a floor rail.

Our robot overhead rails are classified by mounting method into top-mounted, side-mounted, wall-mounted, inverted (suspended), ceiling-suspended, etc.; by rolling method into linear guide and roller types; common materials include steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. The overhead rail suspends the robot and moving parts above the factory floor, making it especially suitable for long-distance applications with tight space or clean-floor requirements, such as automotive welding, painting, large-part handling, and assembly inspection.

Our overhead rails integrate and work in coordination with industrial robots from ABB, KUKA, FANUC, Yaskawa, and other manufacturers, and can be custom-engineered to customer project requirements, including travel, load, speed parameters, main materials, and additional accessories. The overhead rail solution occupies zero floor space; retrofit of old / compact factories only requires reinforcing the top steel beams, with no floor foundation, and has a short construction period; future equipment additions can extend the top rail without replacing the entire hardware, featuring high precision, low failure rate, and easy maintenance.

Core Advantages

Saves Floor Space
Overhead / ceiling mounting means zero floor footprint—ideal for space-constrained shops or clean-floor requirements, with better floor utilization than floor rails.
Extended Work Envelope
Long-distance, wide-range travel lets one robot cover multiple machines or an extra-long line along the rail, improving equipment utilization.
High Rigidity and Stable Operation
High-strength steel structure / reinforced aluminum alloy with optimized mechanical design for smooth operation under dynamic loads and high end-of-arm repeat positioning accuracy.
Flexible Mounting Options
Upright / side-mounted / wall-mounted / inverted / ceiling-mounted configurations support straight or loop layouts and integrate easily with existing lines.
High Compatibility
Seamless integration and synchronization with ABB, KUKA, FANUC, Yaskawa, and other mainstream robots, adapting to a range of interfaces and control methods.
Safe and Low-Maintenance
Limit switches + mechanical safety limits prevent derailment; conductor rail power supply (optional) eliminates cable carrier wear; modular design simplifies maintenance.

Custom Engineering & OEM

We customize stroke, payload, speed, main body material, and accessories to your project requirements, adapting to ABB, KUKA, FANUC, Yaskawa, and other mainstream robot brands. We support upright, side-mounted, wall-mounted, inverted, and ceiling-mounted configurations, and can integrate conductor rail power supply, protective covers, and safety light curtains. Retrofits of older or compact shops install quickly with no floor foundation required, and the rail can be extended later to expand the line. Low minimum order quantities, short lead times, complete technical documentation, and on-site commissioning support—plus OEM volume production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose a floor rail when floor space is sufficient and heavy-duty, high-load handling is required; if factory floor space is tight, floor load-bearing is insufficient, or a clean floor is required, choose an overhead rail—overhead suspension takes up no floor space, improves floor utilization, and avoids the risk of a floor rail colliding with workpieces.

The standard series supports loads of 5–1,000 kg, while heavy-duty / custom solutions can reach 15,000 kg; effective travel is 1–100 m in 1 m increments, with special ultra-long travel available and extension possible later as the production line expands.

Standard models: ±0.05 mm; precision-machined models: up to ±0.03 mm. It can seamlessly integrate with mainstream six-axis robots from ABB, KUKA, FANUC, Yaskawa, and others. Please provide the robot model and interface, and we will offer a compatible solution.

Yes. Mounting method, travel, load, materials, and accessories can be customized according to the on-site layout. We also accept OEM batch production and provide technical documentation and on-site commissioning support.

Yes. Overhead rails use top suspension and require no concrete floor foundation. Retrofitting only requires reinforcing the factory’s top steel beams, with a short construction period and no floor workspace occupation; future equipment additions can extend the rail without replacing the entire hardware, making it a preferred solution for space-constrained workshops.
